Normal text (16px) - The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. This is how your body text will look with these color combinations. Make sure it remains readable for all users.

Large text (20px bold) - Headlines and prominent UI elements.

Small text (14px) - Captions, footnotes, and secondary information. Smaller text needs higher contrast for comfortable reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WCAG contrast ratio?
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines minimum contrast ratios between text and background colors to ensure readability. The contrast ratio ranges from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (maximum contrast, black on white). Higher ratios mean better readability for all users, including those with visual impairments.
What are the AA and AAA requirements?
WCAG Level AA requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text (under 18px or 14px bold) and 3:1 for large text (18px+ or 14px+ bold). Level AAA is stricter: 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. Most websites aim for AA compliance as a minimum.
How is the contrast ratio calculated?
The contrast ratio is calculated using the relative luminance of each color. First, each sRGB channel is linearized, then the luminance is computed as L = 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B. The ratio is (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05) where L1 is the lighter color. This formula is defined in WCAG 2.1.
Does this tool work offline?
Yes! The contrast calculation is pure math — no server calls needed. Once the page loads, you can use it entirely offline. Your color choices are never sent anywhere.
